When Elsa was a child, she killed her sister Anna in a horrible accident, misusing her ice powers while playing. Those powers, which she never asked for or wanted, only grew in time. In an attempt to keep others safe from her magic she was locked away by her parents, living in perfect, absolute isolation during her childhood and adolescence.

Then her parents died and it was her job to take the crown, the throne, all of their responsibilities and be the perfect ruler. And she is; cold, detached, unable to let herself be close to anyone, she manages her powers by trying to learn control of them in private, something that requires immense secrecy with the gates now open. One thing she has found helps is not eating; an unhealthy body cannot produce vast amounts of magic. So long as she keeps herself absolutely occupied with work, makes sure to 'get it out of her system' periodically, and makes sure to never think of issues facing the kingdom with anything but totally cold, hard logic, she has everything under control. She just has to observe things from a distance and never join in, and everything will be fine. Juggling all her duties and her powers is hard, and it's even harder being so completely alone, but she can't do anything else. She can't be anything but perfect. And she can't forget what happened to Anna.

She will never let it go.
